Focus on Agriculture: October 2026

· Agriculture · Carbon · Land · Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland farming now gets far more food from every kilogram of nitrogen, but farm emissions are still 10% above 1990. My October briefing covers livestock methane, fertiliser and nutrient balances, peatland and woodland, new research at Hillsborough, and three things a farm can do this month.

Eight then-and-now tiles for Northern Ireland farming, comparing 1990 or 1991 with the latest year: emissions and livestock methane are up; soil nitrous oxide, peatland emissions, milk carbon intensity and phosphorus surplus are down; nitrogen efficiency is up; nitrogen surplus is unchanged.
